About Me

I'm not a systems administrator by certification or training, but by the fact that my family has computers and I'm responsible for keeping them running. I support a network of multiple operating systems (Windows XP, Vista, Ubuntu and iOS). I'm running Ubuntu on an old computer purchased from the local school district as a file server for backups, media server, web server and database server and subversion repositories. I also support a few servers for some small development teams that I'm working with as well. I'm a geek, so I enjoy learning about these things and keeping them running.
  • I strongly believe in leveraging technology to make our lives easier – we do enough to make them complicated.
  • I'm a proponent of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) because it is inherently more secure, development occurs more quickly and it is free.
  • I love the fact that Ubuntu (the only Linux distribution I have experience with) runs very well on old hardware, even the latest greatest version of Ubuntu. It gets computing in more people's hands and keeps the costs down.
This is one of my contributions to the Linux community. I'll use this blog to share what I've learned in getting and keeping my servers running.
My personal twitter feed is @beauraines and I write on personal topics on Boh-logging. Feel free to reach out to me if you need a hand getting a server up and running to support your family or an organization.
